IP Applications all follow the client server model. Typically a server will listen on a specific or well-known port and wait for a client connection (clients use arbitrary port numbers and close the port once a transaction is completed, whereas the server closes the connection but keeps the port open for further connections).
ReportBuilder identifies TCP or UDP applications through their well-known port numbers and generates reports on IP server port usage based on these. The reports provide you with a good general overview of the main IP applications using up network bandwidth.
The ability to track excessive traffic on a specific port can be helpful in determining the presence of a virus on your network or even a firewall problem. For example, if you find that an IP outside of your network has accessed a server reserved for internal use only, you need to immediately take action to modify your router policies. For detailed traffic figures for each IP port and talking pairs see most active IP ports and talking pairs report.
